Finding Balance and Strength: Jenny’s CrossFit Journey at No Excuses

Jenny’s return to No Excuses CrossFit marked a pivotal moment in her fitness journey. Having been a part of the community since 2014, she experienced the challenges of balancing life, family, and personal health. “I’ve been back at No Excuses since 2014, but was at the first location for a few years. Once I had kids, my budget and my time got tight (not to mention my jeans!) and I had to let it go,” Jenny shares. The turning point came last fall when her husband encouraged her to return, knowing how much she missed the gym and needed to get back in shape.

The Drive to Keep Going

For Jenny, the motivation to keep coming back to CrossFit lies in the visible and tangible results. “Seeing results! Getting stronger, reshaping my body, feeling fit, fitting in old clothes… I KNEW CrossFit worked for my body, and that helped me press through the beginning weeks/months when progress wasn’t so evident yet.” This determination to persevere through the challenging early stages is a testament to her commitment to her health and fitness.

Discovering CrossFit Through Community

Jenny first discovered CrossFit through a connection in a running group. “I was in a running group with one of the original members/coaches when No Excuses first opened. She convinced me to come try a class. Back then, you could try a month for free. Of course, I was hooked after that first month!” This initial experience set the foundation for her ongoing journey with CrossFit.

A Rich Athletic Background

Jenny’s athletic background is diverse, including ballet through high school and various activities as an adult. “I was a dancer through high school, primarily ballet. As an adult, I’ve dabbled off and on in running, dedicating to it for a few years (again… pre-kids!) and did a few half marathons and triathlons,” she explains. Even a significant injury couldn’t keep her down; during a time when she was on crutches, she learned to enjoy swimming, demonstrating her resilience and adaptability.

A Transformative Impact

The return to CrossFit has had a profound impact on Jenny’s life, restoring her fitness and boosting her overall well-being. “I actually HAVE a level of fitness again. I’m eating healthier all around to maximize my results and not negate the work I’m doing. I feel stronger and more confident and healthy,” she states. One of her proudest moments at the gym includes surpassing a 200-pound deadlift, a milestone that brought her a great sense of achievement.

Inspiration from the Community

Jenny draws inspiration from her fellow gym members, both experienced and new. “Everyone around me in the gym! I aspire to be like the people stronger than me, and I’m inspired by the newer folks that are challenging their bodies and minds to so many new things!” she shares. The memory of her previous fitness level also motivates her, as she strives to narrow the gap between where she was and where she wants to be.

Setting and Achieving Goals

Every challenging workout Jenny faces becomes an opportunity for growth and confidence. “Every time I face a WOD that looks really hard…whether the length or weight or composition of exercises… I have that great feeling of accomplishment at the end. I did it, I got through it. I didn’t quit. Every one of those gives me the confidence to do the next,” she reflects. Among her goals is the determination to achieve a strict pull-up, a personal milestone she is eager to reach.

Balancing Life and Fitness

Outside the gym, Jenny enjoys a variety of activities, including running, traveling, spending time with her family, and gardening. She also cherishes her love for naps, even though finding time for one can be a challenge! Her well-rounded interests highlight the importance of finding balance between fitness and other life passions.

Advice for New Members

Jenny’s advice for newcomers to CrossFit is simple yet powerful: “Don’t compare yourself to others. Be motivated by those around you, sure. But don’t ever feel inferior. If you are giving YOUR 100%, then you are doing JUST AS MUCH as someone lifting heavier weight or doing strict RX movements.” Her words encourage everyone to focus on their personal journey and celebrate their progress, regardless of where they start.
