Favorite Motivational Quote: “It doesn’t matter if you think you can or can’t, just start.”

How long have you been doing CrossFit? October 2014

How did you first discover CrossFit and what made you decide to start? “I heard a friend raving about it. But it was when she told me her kids could be near her and watch, that’s what sold me.”

Tell us about your fitness/sports background: “I grew up in a soccer family, and started playing at age five. By sophomore year, I was the captain of our JV team in an undefeated year with only three goals scored on us. In college, my exercise was primarily riding my mountain bike for transportation. After college, with urging of my doctor, I committed to exercising 6x/week to support my mental health. I’ve been doing some form of gym/crossfit workouts for the past 30 years to maintain balance and stability in my physical and mental health. It’s been an amazing journey of developing the strength and courage to live an empowered, authentic, and beautiful life.”

What sorts of positive changes (mental, physical, emotional) have you noticed in your life since getting involved at No Excuses? “When I returned to No Excuses last January, I was in a tough place. Having the community and coaching support has helped me get back on my feet…eliminating some lower back pain, allowing me to run again, and in helping me move forward with some important relationships.”

Who or what keeps you coming back and motivated? “My 6am crew and coaches. I couldn’t do it without you guys 👊🏼💥”

In what other ways do you use your fitness? “Fitness is a meditative space for me when I do it alone. I do my best thinking here. And when I workout with my early morning crew, I use my time to explore the limits of my capacities…in terms of strength, mobility, skills, and my self-talk.”

Please share with us a favorite CrossFit or No Excuses moment. “A month ago we did 1RM on the clean and jerk. I initially failed my final attempt. But after resting for two minutes, I gave it one more go. With the cheering and encouragement of my crew, I PRd my lift at body weight. It was such a rush to be witnessed in a new level of strength as a 50 year old. It was the bomb 💥”

Name one goal you would like to achieve in the next year. “By this time next year I will be paid to inspire people through speaking, to find the courage to move forward in their health and lives.”

Tell us about your hobbies and interests outside of the gym: “I love spending time with my children. We go on walks, talk, and watch shows and movies together. I also love getting to expand my skills, in getting to know people by listening, or developing my courage by facing fears, and by aligning with my authentic self. Oh yes, and I’m a foodie…and love trying new foods or cooking favorites.”

What advice do you have for someone just starting CrossFit or is on the fence about starting? “Give it a try. You won’t know if it’s a good fit for you unless you give it a chance. CrossFit has been a game changer for me. In the first year, my only goal was to show up. I had to overcome social anxiety and the fear of these intimidating workouts. So, I focused on the one thing I could control…walking through that door more days than not. Everything after that was a bonus. Also, try to resist the temptation to compare. It will only ruin your joy. Instead, remember that every single CrossFit member, was a beginner once. And no one has all the gifts. Find what you enjoy and feel good at…and lean into the movements that challenge you. This will ensure you come back by keeping it fun, while also helping you improve your overall strength and fitness. Give it a try.”

What do you love most about No Excuses? “The overall vibe is very positive. And that starts at the top. No Excuses is what it is because of Brandon’s leadership. Thank you Brandon for creating the space where people can feel safe to be themselves while also maintaining and improving their health.”
