CrossFit Open FAQ update

The announcement of CrossFit Open workout 24.1 is less than 24 hours away! And we are getting ready to do the workout on Friday, March 1.

We’ve had some questions and things that need clarification, so hopefully this email will address those. Or you can watch this video. If you still have questions or concerns, please send an email to Coach Brandon or contact your team coach.

Q: What team am I on for The Open?

A: We announced that earlier this week. You can view the teams here. If you don’t see your name you have registered late, so we will add you to a team. If you still haven’t registered, you can still join the fun. Register at this link

Q: Should I workout on Thursday before The Open?

A: It depends on what your goal is. If you’re very competitive and want to have a good ranking on the CrossFit worldwide leaderboard, then a rest day might be good.

If your main goal is weight loss, improving your fitness then working out on Thursday is fine. But you might want to use lighter weights or less intensity.

If you have a demanding schedule and it’s difficult to get to the gym, then come workout on Thursday and plan to come back on Friday for The Open.

Q: What time should I come to the gym on Friday?

A: Come to your favorite class time. However, you are free to attend any class time you want. Just keep in mind that we won’t be running a traditional class. We will be doing the workout in 10-20 minute heats. You will warm up on your own.

Q: What are workout heats?

A: We will have 4-5 people in a heat working out every 10-20 minutes. The amount of people and time will depend on the workout, which we won’t know until it’s released on Thursday afternoon. For example, last year two of the workouts were 14-and 15 minutes long, so we would do 20-minute heats to allow time for the next heat to transition to the workout floor. The third workout last year was 6 minutes, so we would do a 11-minute heat.

Q: When and how do I sign up for a heat?

A: You have to be at the gym to sign up for a heat. You can’t ask a coach, friend, or family member to sign you up for a heat without being at the gym. We do this for a few reasons. You may have all the intentions to be in the 5pm heat, but if you get delayed at work, kids, traffic and miss your heat then that’s a spot someone could have used. Or if you’re running late for the 5pm heat and don’t warm up that’s a recipe for injury. When you arrive at the gym there will be a coach that will sign you up for a heat time. You can also sign up for a time to judge at that time as well.

Q: What’s the weekly attire?

A: Each week there’s a different theme for workout clothes to earn points for your team. Week 1 is No Excuses CrossFit shirt or colors (blue, black, white). Week 2 is Patriotic (red, white, blue) and Week 3 is St. Patrick’s Day (green, orange, white).

Q: What does the judge do?

A: The judge is making sure the athlete is performing the correct number of reps and is meeting the proper movement standards. The judge is a judge, not a counter. If someone is not hitting a wall ball target it’s a no rep. If someone is not getting their chin over the bar it’s a no rep. This is a competition with standards, which must be upheld. If someone is consistently getting no reps or not meeting movement standards then they may need to do the scaled version or re-do the workout.

Q: When and what is the potluck?

A: The potluck is all day. If you plan to participate in the potluck, bring enough food for 10-12 people. We have over 60 people doing The Open and don’t expect you to bring something that feeds 60 people. Let’s try to keep the foods somewhat healthy. It’s also a good idea to think of appetizer or finger foods. Your award winning chili or grandmas famous lasagna might not be ideal after a workout. Drinks don’t count toward the potluck.
