Finding Strength and Community: Greg’s CrossFit Journey

Finding Strength and Community: Greg’s CrossFit Journey

Fifteen years ago, Greg was introduced to CrossFit, and it has since become a significant part of his life. Initially hesitant, Greg’s journey into CrossFit began with some nudging from his younger brother, who owned BTB CrossFit in Atlanta at the time. “He pestered me for a couple of years before I finally gave in and tried it. One of the best things I ever did,” Greg shared.

A New Perspective on Fitness

CrossFit has transformed Greg’s approach to fitness and diet. Reflecting on his pre-CrossFit days, Greg described how he used to go through the motions at conventional gyms without clear goals or direction. “The CrossFit approach to total fitness, in a measurable manner, is nothing I would have ever seen in a Globo Gym. I guess as a CPA I am number obsessed, but the ability to track your progress over time is great. I am without a doubt in the best shape I have ever been,” he explained.

Surpassing Expectations

One of Greg’s proudest achievements in CrossFit is lifting more weight in Olympic lifts than he ever thought possible. “While I am still not lifting truly heavy weights, I would never have thought I could lift as much as I currently do on the Olympic lifts,” he noted. This accomplishment reflects the tangible progress Greg has made, defying his initial expectations.

Motivation and Community

For Greg, the motivation to keep pushing comes from the friendly competition within the No Excuses community. “I think one of the secret ingredients at No Excuses is the friendly competition within the members on each day’s workout,” Greg said. The camaraderie and shared experiences foster a supportive yet competitive environment where members are encouraged to surpass their limits. “You put that result on the whiteboard, and you would much rather it be a result that beats your buddies,” he added.

Consistent Dedication

Greg’s proudest CrossFit achievement is his consistent dedication to showing up and putting in the work. “There are many days when it would just be easier to go home after work, or days when you know you are going to suck at that particular WOD, but I think that is when you really make your breakthrough,” he shared. This persistence has paid off, with movements that once seemed daunting becoming some of his favorites, like handstand push-ups.

Setting Goals and Looking Ahead

Looking ahead, Greg has set a goal to improve his results in the CrossFit Open, aiming for a top 100 finish worldwide in his age group. This goal highlights his continuous pursuit of excellence and growth within the sport.

Advice for New Members

Greg’s advice for new members is simple but powerful: “Get involved in the No Excuses community! It really is special. Ben and the other coaches have created a really great environment that is encouraging to everyone.” He encourages newcomers to participate in community events like the CrossFit Open or the Nutrition Challenge, emphasizing the supportive nature of the community.

A Life Transformed

“CrossFit has changed my life,” Greg concluded. Beyond physical fitness, he believes that CrossFit has instilled a mental attitude of perseverance and resilience that carries over into other aspects of his life. “It helps me to be a better dad, husband, and person,” he added, reflecting on the broader impact of his CrossFit journey.
