How long have you been doing CrossFit? Started about 14 years ago, did it for 8 years, took a few years off, re-started at No Excuses about 2 years ago
How did you first discover CrossFit and what made you decide to start?
“I discovered CrossFit through a video long before it became known. The intensity of the workouts and the sheer effort people were putting in caught my attention. Even though it looked incredibly demanding, it sparked my curiosity, and I decided to give it a try. I had never enjoyed traditional gyms, so CrossFit felt like a refreshing and much-needed change.
Tell us about your fitness/sports background:
I played volleyball for a club and swam for my high school. I am a nerd so I did not play any sports in college.
What sorts of positive changes (mental, physical, emotional) have you noticed in your life since getting involved at No Excuses?
I am a working mom with a very demanding job that can be quite stressful at times. CrossFit has become my outlet as it helps me release negative energy, boosts my mood, and gives me an hour that’s entirely my own. I travel some for work, but when I am in town, I never miss a class. It gives me a mental reset that allows me to show up stronger in every other part of my life.
Who or what keeps you coming back and motivated?
Although this may not be a popular opinion, I don’t believe in relying on motivation for the long term. Motivation can get you started, but it’s fleeting and often dependent on external factors. What truly keeps me coming back is discipline. Even on days when I don’t feel like working out – and know my performance might fall below my own standards – I still show up, because consistency matters. That said, there’s something unique about CrossFit – the energy, the challenge, and the sense of community – that keeps people coming back.
In what other ways do you use your fitness?
So many ways! It helps me keep up with my 11-year-old son, tackle 10 or 12 flights of stairs when I’m visiting job sites, and spend entire days walking when we travel. It’s not just about working out, it’s about having the energy to fully live my life.
Please share with us a favorite CrossFit or No Excuses moment.
I really enjoyed competing in the Hugo Open. It had been many years since I last competed, and while my fitness level and strength aren’t what they once were, the event was so much fun and so relaxed that I’m truly glad I did it.
Name one goal you would like to achieve in the next year (doesn’t have to be CrossFit related, but it can be)
To continue writing and publishing regularly. I am an introvert, so writing allows me to express ideas and experiences in a more meaningful way.
Tell us about your hobbies and interests outside of the gym:
I am a huge football (soccer) fan. As far as hobbies I enjoy traveling and reading. I am a dog lover and I am involved in animal rescue.
What advice do you have for someone just starting CrossFit or is on the fence about starting?
There’s a reason why there are no mirrors in CrossFit gyms. It is not about watching and recording yourself, it’s about showing up for yourself. There’s a place for everyone, no matter your age, background, or starting point. It’s a space that’s free of judgment and full of support, where people genuinely want to see you succeed. And when you finally do something you once thought you couldn’t, it completely changes how you see yourself. You realize you’re stronger, both physically and mentally.
What do you love most about No Excuses?
That it has a super laid back atmosphere. The coaches are not only incredibly knowledgeable and great at what they do, but they are also genuinely good people.
