Back in June of 2015, Dave walked into No Excuses CrossFit, not knowing that this decision would profoundly impact his life. His journey into CrossFit began with a challenge from his workout partner, who believed that a 245-pound bodybuilder could take on the CrossFit Games and “stand on the podium.” The experiment may not have lasted for his friend, but for Dave, it was just the beginning. “He stopped CrossFit after six months,” Dave remembers, “and I couldn’t.”
A Diverse Athletic Background
Dave’s athletic background is diverse—he was a high school wrestler, played tennis, soccer, rollerbladed, and even considered himself a “pretend runner.” However, nothing quite prepared him for the transformative experience CrossFit would offer. “Work doesn’t seem to stress me out anymore, and I am the happiest I have ever been,” he shares, revealing the mental and emotional benefits he’s gained since joining No Excuses.
The Motivation to Keep Going
One of Dave’s primary fitness goals is unique: “Don’t get mad, but my goal has always been to keep weight on. I finally hit a new high last month.” This goal, while different from most, highlights the personalized approach CrossFit allows—where individual goals, no matter how unconventional, are respected and supported. But what keeps Dave coming back, day after day, to the intense workouts and the supportive community? The answer is simple: he can’t seem to get enough. “Can’t seem to get enough is one of many reasons,” Dave admits.
Unforgettable Moments and Personal Goals
Dave’s journey with No Excuses CrossFit has been marked by unforgettable moments, but one stands out in particular. He recalls witnessing “that Bridges guy not giving up on what everyone thought was a failed rep and pulled it off anyway.” This moment, emblematic of the perseverance and grit CrossFit instills in its athletes, left a lasting impression on Dave. When it comes to setting goals, Dave has a bucket list item: “Those damn muscle-ups! Just doing one is on my bucket list.” He also has his sights set on a personal challenge for the next CrossFit Open: “Finish top 100,000 in next year’s men’s open. Don’t laugh, I’m being serious.”
Life Beyond the Gym
Outside the gym, Dave’s life is equally dynamic. He enjoys flipping houses and riding dirt bikes—activities that complement his dedication to fitness. But within CrossFit, what he loves most about No Excuses is the coaching staff and the unique blend of personalities they bring to the table. “How all the coaches are so different but yet complement each other in a way that leaves you fulfilled,” he explains. The sense of family and the variety each member brings to the gym is something Dave deeply appreciates. “Everyone in the CF family brings something to the table,” he says. “Even if this doesn’t make sense, I know you know what I mean!”
Advice for Newcomers: Dive In
For those considering starting CrossFit or standing on the fence, Dave offers straightforward advice: “Don’t overthink it. It’s fun for a reason.” His story is a testament to the power of community, the joy of personal growth, and the unexpected places where fitness can take you.
