Back in April 2017, Linda decided it was time for a change. After teaching group fitness classes Monday through Friday, she wanted to do something just for herself. The solution? CrossFit at No Excuses. A friend had been raving about the gym, and once Linda reduced her teaching load, she made the leap.
“I kept hearing a lot about CrossFit from a friend who joined No Excuses,” Linda recalled. “At the time, I was teaching group fitness classes Monday through Friday, but I really wanted to change the routine and do something for myself. When I was able to drop to teaching a few classes a week, I started at No Excuses.”
A Strong Athletic Background
Linda’s love for sports and fitness started well before CrossFit. Growing up, she played softball, basketball, and volleyball in high school. Her passion for athletics extended into her professional life, where she not only taught group fitness but also coached varsity softball and 8th-grade girls basketball at Brookwood High School. But despite her active lifestyle, Linda was ready for something new.
Overcoming Physical Challenges
Like many people, Linda faced physical challenges when she started CrossFit, especially with her shoulders. “When I started working out at No Excuses, my shoulders were a wreck. Both had become weak over time from wear and tear, and as much as I hated to admit it, age,” she explained.
At first, overhead movements were a significant struggle. “Any WOD that involved lifting a barbell overhead, I could only use a PVC pipe,” Linda said. But through consistent effort, she saw incredible progress. “One year later, being able to do 45 thrusters at 35 pounds for CrossFit Open 18.5 was HUGE for me. I’m pretty happy with a 40-pound overhead squat as well!”
The Challenge that Keeps Her Coming Back
For Linda, the challenge is what drives her to keep showing up. “When it challenges you, it changes you,” she shared. This mentality has pushed her to new heights in her fitness journey, whether it’s mastering a tough workout or hitting a personal best. One moment that stands out for Linda? Ringing the PR bell after deadlifting 190 pounds. “When Coach Chris told me to ring the bell after my deadlift of 190 pounds., that was a proud moment.”
Encouragement for Newcomers
Linda’s advice for anyone hesitant about starting CrossFit? “There really is ‘no excuse’ to not try CrossFit,” she said. “Come to a class, look around the gym, and you’ll notice members of all ages, physical abilities, and athletic levels participating in a WOD.” It’s a reminder that CrossFit is for everyone, no matter where they are on their fitness journey.
What Makes No Excuses Special
For Linda, the best part of No Excuses CrossFit is the supportive environment. “The support and encouragement you receive from the coaches and other members is incredible,” she said. It’s this sense of community that keeps her motivated and makes every workout a little easier.
