In October 2017, Mary Beth decided to take a leap and try something new. “Joe, my other half, convinced me to try it, and I needed a change,” she recalled. That decision led her to No Excuses CrossFit, where she’s been challenging herself and thriving ever since.
A Refreshing Change
With a background in running and weight training that began in her mid-twenties, Mary Beth was no stranger to fitness. But she knew she needed something different to keep her motivated. “The different workouts challenge me and prevent exercise burnout,” she explained.
Mary Beth quickly realized that NEC offered more than just physical activity—it was a place of inspiration. “I love the daily motivation from simply seeing how hard the NEC members and coaches work in classes and competitions,” she said.
The sense of belonging she felt in the NEC community only deepened as she got involved in fundraisers and partnerships. “Being a part of the community through the fundraisers and other partnerships is personally rewarding,” she shared.
Overcoming Challenges and Finding Motivation
What keeps Mary Beth coming back to the gym? “I want to stay as fit as possible,” she said. NEC’s approach to fitness—offering adjustments and solutions for limitations—has been key to her success.
The Benefits Beyond the Gym
Mary Beth uses her fitness in practical ways, from staying injury-free to reducing stress. “I want to build and maintain physical and mental strength to prevent injuries, stay active outside the gym, and stay healthy overall,” she explained.
Exercise, she noted, has always been her go-to for managing stress: “We all know how bad stress is on the body.”
A Rope Climb Victory
When asked about her favorite CrossFit moment, Mary Beth didn’t hesitate: “There are many, especially seeing the outstanding NEC athletes compete. But when I finally managed the rope climb and could repeat it, I couldn’t wait to celebrate. Especially after having shoulder surgery.”
This achievement is a testament to her perseverance and dedication to improving, no matter the obstacles.
Advice for Newcomers
For anyone considering CrossFit, Mary Beth offers this advice: “It’s the best way to have variety in your workout and broaden your fitness capability. Although I haven’t mastered the heavy weight, I am improving and learning with every workout. I didn’t know what a power snatch was before joining NEC.”
