In July 2016, JC walked through the doors of No Excuses CrossFit, ready to make a change. After years of indulging in cheeseburgers, pizza, and a variety of beers, JC decided to take a different path. Living in Mexico, CrossFit hadn’t sparked his interest, but once he saw the No Excuses CrossFit sign in Suwanee, something clicked.
“I spent four years eating cheeseburgers, pizza, Chinese food—you name it—and drinking Coors Light, Miller Lite, Bud Light, and of course, Corona. Thank God one day I passed by Lawrenceville-Suwanee and saw the No Excuses CrossFit sign. I decided to give it a try!”
A Fitness Journey with No Background
JC had dabbled in a few sports like soccer, Taekwondo, boxing, and running, but nothing serious. CrossFit changed all of that. “A lot of people have been telling me that I look way different now. That makes me feel awesome!” JC shared. “In my job, I never get tired, which is crazy! I have better posture, and right now, ‘I’m too sexy for my shirt.’ That gives me the security I need in my life.”
Staying Motivated
What keeps JC coming back to No Excuses CrossFit isn’t just personal progress—it’s the community. “Every single member of No Excuses CrossFit motivates me. I’ve never seen someone quit just like that. I need to be better than I was yesterday.”
JC also uses his newfound fitness in everyday life. “At work, I’m always trying to improve my movement when I lift boxes. I rely on my endurance when loading containers. And I love push pressing my little cousins!”
A Memorable First Muscle-Up
JC’s proudest moment? Achieving his first muscle-up. “I don’t have words to explain that feeling,” JC said. “Brandon took a video of that muscle-up, and it showed me that they care about us and feel good watching us succeed.”
What’s Next?
JC’s next goal is to compete in a CrossFit competition—not necessarily the CrossFit Games, but a local one with high-level competitors. “I’m going to try to compete. Not CrossFit Games, but some competition with a pretty good level of competitors.”
When JC isn’t at the gym, he’s unwinding by watching Netflix or taking his bike for a ride. But the lessons of CrossFit stick with him, and he has advice for newcomers: “Patience, lots of patience, and dedication! It’s easy to get uncomfortable, but just listen to the people with experience.”
What JC Loves About No Excuses
What does JC love most about No Excuses CrossFit? “I love that everybody is suffering to get the WOD done as soon as possible. It’s just great to get there and watch everyone from the class all sweaty and lying on the floor. I check the board to and I think, ‘Man, I need to go all-out so I can have a pretty okay time!’”
